5 Tips & Tricks for a Successful Interior Paint Project

Without the right tools and skills, painting can be a messy task. The worst part? Cleanup. Not only do straight lines require painstaking tape peeling, but the paint never seems to stay where you want it. If interior painting is a job you try to avoid at all costs, today is your lucky day. These tips and tricks will help make painting manageable so that your paint project ends in success rather than frustration.
1. De-Fuzz Your Paint Rollers
Brand new paint rollers leave lint and fluff in their wake, while older rollers are a dust magnet when not in use. Both scenarios will cause paint streaks and imperfections. Eliminate these issues by taking a lint roller to your paint roller before every use. The sticky paper on the lint roller will pick up any dust and fuzz, leaving your paint roller clean, fresh and primed for paint.
2. Line Your Paint Trays
It’s no secret that paint trays can be a major hassle to clean. Rinsing them out is extremely time consuming, and so much paint goes to waste. To streamline your clean-up time, consider using aluminum foil to line your paint tray. That way, when you’re finished painting, you can simply pour the unused paint back into the can and toss the foil liner in the garbage, leaving a clean pan.
3. Protect Hardware
Taking off hardware during a paint project can quickly become a difficult or even impossible job. Rather than fighting with its removal, consider this painting trick instead: Spread a thick coat of petroleum jelly over hinges, screws, and other hardware you don’t wish to paint. The petroleum jelly prevents the paint from sticking to the surfaces of the hardware. When you’re done painting? Just wipe the petroleum jelly off.
4. Avoid Paint Can Messes
When painting, most people wipe excess paint from their paintbrush on the rim of the paint can after dipping the brush into the paint. This isn’t the best idea, as it usually results in paint filling the channel that the lid of the can has to fit into. When that channel is full of paint, it can lead to splatters when the lid is put back on, or even paint building up so that the lid doesn’t seal properly. All of this can be avoided by putting a large rubber band around the can so that it lays across the top opening. After dipping your brush in the paint, wipe the extra paint off your brush using the rubber band so that the excess will drip back into the can.
5. Remove Painters Tape Smoothly
It’s common knowledge that painters tape is used to keep lines even. But have you ever tried removing the tape after painting? When done wrong, wet paint can smudge or big chunks of dried paint can come off with the tape. Avoid these outcomes by pulling the tape off slowly and at an angle. Doing so will help you achieve the sharp line you desire in one motion.
