Easy Ways to Update Your Space Without Spending Money

Easy Ways to Update Your Space Without Spending Money

If your home feels a bit stagnant, there are plenty of ways to give it a refresh without pulling out your wallet. All you need is a little bit of creativity to make old items feel new.

1. Try a New Furniture Arrangement

While it’s unrealistic to run out and buy a new sofa every time your living room design starts to feel a bit tired, there are many creative ways to refresh a room just by shaking up the layout a bit. Rearranging your furniture is the simplest way to make a space feel new, as it changes up the functionality and the overall feel. For instance, switch out that stale console table in the entryway for a stately bench and houseplant. Then maybe give that console table a new life in your dining room as a mini buffet table. Or think about pushing your bed up against another wall in the bedroom and moving your couch to another position as well. Just moving around the furniture in your home should counter any impulse you have to purchase new pieces.

2. Get Rid of the Clutter

The more stuff we add to our spaces, the more messy and disorganized they tend to look. That’s why simply decluttering and streamlining your surfaces can refresh a room. Don’t take on too much at once and get overwhelmed, though. Just go one room (or one drawer or shelf) at a time. Keep the items you still enjoy and get rid of those that would be more appreciated by someone else. Once you’ve cleared things out, showcase your most meaningful belongings, swap out other items seasonally, and donate anything that doesn’t bring you happiness.

3. Rotate Your Accessories

Do you have a fabulous vase full of decorative grasses that adds height and texture to your living room? It would look just as amazing in your front entryway. The same goes for your grouping of pillar candles on the hall table. Consider moving all of your smaller, versatile decorative pieces to new homes. By rotating decorative accents throughout your home you’ll effectively change the mood and refresh the look without spending a dime. Get creative and try out new combinations of items until you hit on something you like. In addition, books with attractive covers can be taken off the bookshelf and placed on a coffee table or side table. Or if you’re using a decorative tray or bowl in your bedroom, try switching it out for one in the living room or entryway.

4. Look to Nature

The value in adding plants to a home’s design cannot be overstated, even if you’re lacking a green thumb. They not only bring color to a space, but life as well. The only downside is that having a house full of plants can be quite a financial investment. In short, plants aren’t cheap. That’s why it’s a good idea to grab some garden shears and head out into your yard. You can place fresh cut flowers or small, textured branches in a vase to achieve a similar result as potted plants — without the big price tag.

5. Create a Gallery Wall

Curate a selection of your favorite pieces of art or accessories from your home and arrange them artfully to create a stunning gallery wall. It will bring dimension to the room as well as make a striking impact. And don’t be afraid to switch out the artwork occasionally to keep things fresh. Framing unexpected items, like Grandma’s lace handkerchief or your child’s artwork, goes a long way in adding to the character of the display.
